Alfred Dabat first studied at the Beaux-Arts in Algiers, then went to Paris where he was taught by Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. He later returned to live in Algeria. He exhibited at the French Artists from 1899 to 1935, was honored with numerous awards, and became a member of the jury of the Prix de Rome and the French Artists Salon.
