After graduation from high school, he entered John Herron Art School in Indianapolis, Indiana. There he studied four years of figure painting, still life and landscape painting under William Forsyth and Clifton Wheeler. After graduation from high school, he entered John Herron Art School in Indianapolis, Indiana. There he studied four years of figure painting, still life and landscape painting under William Forsyth and Clifton Wheeler. He also studied four years of advanced modeling under sculptor Myra Reynolds Richards. He also studied under Will Vawter and Edward K. Williams. After leaving art school, he became a member of the Hoosier Salon, which at that time was held in Chicago.
