Bayard Taylor Berndt was an active member of the Wilmington, Delaware community of artists following the age of illustrators studying under Howard Pyle. He was a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art as well as the Wilmington Academy of Art, where he later became Director. Berndt's instructors at the Wilmington Academy included N.C. He was a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art as well as the Wilmington Academy of Art, where he later became Director. Berndt's instructors at the Wilmington Academy included N.C. Wyeth, Gayle Hoskins, Thornton Oakley, and Frank Schoonover. He never felt a need to go outside the Brandywine region to paint, plus he was running a gallery/frame/art supply store full time.
