He was first in the city directory of Milwaukee in 1891 at age 18, and he shared a studio with Frank Bresler who was also from Manitowoc. From 1896 to 1898, he was in Detroit and worked as a portrait artist with Percy Cuthberg Nash, and then went back to Milwaukee until 1918 when he began a residency in his hometown that lasted through... He was first in the city directory of Milwaukee in 1891 at age 18, and he shared a studio with Frank Bresler who was also from Manitowoc. From 1896 to 1898, he was in Detroit and worked as a portrait artist with Percy Cuthberg Nash, and then went back to Milwaukee until 1918 when he began a residency in his hometown that lasted through the 1920s. Returning to Milwaukee, he worked at the Milwaukee Public Museum as a Federal Art Project artist during the Depression and then joined the museum staff.
