He left for Paris in 1844 and joined the studio of François Rude in 1846. This is where he met Seid Enkess, black freed slave who became his model. He exhibited Enkess Seid's bust at the Salon. He left for Paris in 1844 and joined the studio of François Rude in 1846. This is where he met Seid Enkess, black freed slave who became his model. He exhibited Enkess Seid's bust at the Salon. That was the beginning of his ethnographic work. In 1854 he made his first trip to Algeria and brought "a fine collection of busts." He became a noted sculptor, received official orders, and exhibited in Paris in the provinces and abroad. He is the grandfather of Suzanne Drouet-Réveillaud.
