He received his earliest training from his father, the painter Johann Georg Pforr (1745-98), and his uncle, the art professor and first inspector of the painting gallery in Kassel, Johann Heinrich Tischbein the younger (1742-1808). In the summer of 1808, several students of the Vienna Art Academy gathered together. Unconvinced by the prevailing school of thought, they searched for their own motifs and forms of expression. They were influenced by the romantic view of the Middle Ages, developing in poetry at that time. The young artists held weekly meetings.
