After receiving the Distinguished Faculty Award for professional contributions and teaching excellence in 1990, and the Everhart Teacher/Scholar Award in 1995, Dellinger retired from teaching in 2000. After receiving the Distinguished Faculty Award for professional contributions and teaching excellence in 1990, and the Everhart Teacher/Scholar Award in 1995, Dellinger retired from teaching in 2000. He then was named a trustee of the Haggin Museum in Stockton, and was active in organizing a series of plein-air exhibitions. One of them was a three-year project in Yosemite Valley in which 25 artists painted the park within that time period. An exhibition of these works was held at the Haggin in 2001.
