From 1871 on Bechtolsheim studied at the Munich Academy, where he was a student of the historical painter Karl Theodor Piloty. Thereafter he devoted himself to landscape painting and was influenced by Adolf Lier. Thereafter he devoted himself to landscape painting and was influenced by Adolf Lier. Gustav Freiherr von Bechtolsheim died in 1924.
