He then returned to Sweden and was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm 1937-1943. His role model was the Danish artist Oluf Høst. Rudberg partly grew up on the island of Hven, where he lived and painted during the summer during his adult life. He was a mood painter and he created sun-drenched sea images in summary planes with few suggestive colors. Gustav made his breakthrough with the Swedish art critics with an exhibition at the Artists' House in Stockholm in 1959.
