Jan van Huchtenburg (1647-1733) began his artistic education under Thomas Wijk. A journey to Italy, where he visited his brother Jacob, had substantial influence on his work. He went to Paris as a painter to continue studying under the courtly painter Adam Frans van der Meulen of Louis XIV of France. He returned to Haarlem three years later, where he became an art dealer. He accompanied the campaigns of the Austrian field marshal Prince Eugene of Savoy between 1708 and 1717. The large painting... Read full biography
Jan van Huchtenburg (1647-1733) began his artistic education under Thomas Wijk. A journey to Italy, where he visited his brother Jacob, had substantial influence on his work. He went to Paris as a painter to continue studying under the courtly painter Adam Frans van der Meulen of Louis XIV of France. He returned to Haarlem three years later, where he became an art dealer. He accompanied the campaigns of the Austrian field marshal Prince Eugene of Savoy between 1708 and 1717. The large painting cycles were published in a collected book. He went to the court of the Elector Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz in 1711. The painter spent most of his later life in Haag. He died in Amsterdam in 1733.
