After his time as a soldier in the Second World War, he returned to the Graz School of Applied Arts, and soon moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was a student of Fritz Wotruba in the years 1947-1950. In 1950/51 he received a scholarship to Paris. He participated in the sculpture class of Ossip Zadkine at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.
