A painter and art critic from Tournai, Belgiuim, he trained with Legendre at the Tournai Academy and in Brussels from 1869 to 1974. He traveled in France, Italy and Germany before settling in Brussels, where he exhibited for the first time in 1875. Herbo began with genre paintings and historical compositions, but eventually devoted himself almost exclusively to portraits, often of Oriental beauties and gypsies, but also of political figures and wealthy bourgeois of his time, in a colorful, harmonious palette. Herbo exhibited regularly in Ghent, Brussels and Cologne, as well as at the Munich Salon (1883-1894) and the Paris Salon (1879-1905). He traveled in France, Italy and Germany before settling in Brussels, where he exhibited for the first time in 1875. Herbo began with genre paintings and historical compositions, but eventually devoted himself almost exclusively to portraits, often of Oriental beauties and gypsies, but also of political figures and wealthy bourgeois of his time, in a colorful, harmonious palette. Herbo exhibited regularly in Ghent, Brussels and Cologne, as well as at the Munich Salon (1883-1894) and the Paris Salon (1879-1905). Considered one of the most important Belgian portraitists of his time, and co-founder of the "L'Essor" circle in 1876, Léon Herbo was promoted to Chevalier of the Order of Leopold.
