Born in Lawrence, Kansas, Abrams was from a wealthy family and traveled abroad extensively as a young man. In 1873, he moved to Texas with his family, and he attended schools in Dallas. He graduated in 1892 from Princeton University with a degree in art and architecture and then went to New York where he attended the Art Students League*.
