He received his first lessons from his older brother Hendrik. Then he was a student of Nicolaas Berchem and Gabriel van der Leeuw. In England he was the teacher of Jana de Visscher. He received his first lessons from his older brother Hendrik. Then he was a student of Nicolaas Berchem and Gabriel van der Leeuw. In England he was the teacher of Jana de Visscher. Thanks to the recognition Michiel Carree had gained, he was invited to Berlin by the King of Prussia, Frederick, who appointed him a court painter.
