His formative training in the study of art, specialising in drawing and painting was at the Warwick School of Art and later with the North East London Arts College where he studied Factionalism. Patterson continues with this style where diverse subject matter and medium, bright colours, solidly constructed abstract relief paintings of landscapes, nudes and musicians are well known. He has also made the transition into wall assemblage paintings which consist of shapes, covered in canvas, treated then painted with acrylic or oil paints.
