She was a motivated artist, a dedicated wife and mother who studied at prestigious art institutions and with prominent artists of her time. Newman was born October 5, 1907 in the small farming community of Loogootee in Southern Indiana. At the age of eighteen, she moved to Chicago to accept a position as a dress designer for Marshall Fields. While in Chicago, she studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts.
