He immigrated to the United States at the age of fourteen with his father, settling in New York City. He had already completed six years of study in Italy at the Scoule Techiniche Belle Arti. Once in the USA, he studied at Cooper Union, Broadmoor Art Academy with John F. Carlson and the Art Student's League in New York with Robert Henri. The so-called romantic artist was deeply involved in teaching art and got his first teaching position at the Hansen School of Fine Arts in New York in 1918.
