He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 17, 1939. He earned a BA Degree from the University of Colorado in 1951, a Bachelor of Architecture Degree from the University of Florida in 1955, and in 1956, attended the School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro where he studied with Roberto Burle Marx.
