Harpley's fascination with movement and flight, inspired by his time working on an American air base, played a role in his sculpting career. He often depicted single female figures on swings, hammocks, and in acrobatic poses. Harpley was also influenced by Egyptian art and sculpture, which he encountered during his National Service in Cairo. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1954 and became a full Royal Academician in 1981.
