He painted in the Neo-Classic tradition with mirror-like finishes on his paintings, giving no evidence of his own personality. He first gained prominence in Europe where he was elected an academician at the Royal Academies of both France and Sweden. He had studied in Paris with Joseph- Marie Vien, teacher of the famous Neo-Classical painter Jacques-Louis David.
