He took his formal art training at the Vienna Royal Academy and Beaux Arts in Paris and traveled extensively in his youth. In 1930, he purchased a coconut farm on the Island of Dominica in the West Indies and created a highly colorful series of landscapes from his surroundings. In 1930, he purchased a coconut farm on the Island of Dominica in the West Indies and created a highly colorful series of landscapes from his surroundings. Many of these paintings were exhibited in New York City. In 1932, he moved to New Orleans, where he became a popular teacher and artist.
