Cortellini began drawing in his native city and later trained under Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer in Seville. He traveled to northern Italy to collect views of cities and returned to Seville to complete his artistic training. He painted numerous portraits of Isabella II and Francisco de Asís and was awarded the Gold Medal at the National Exhibition of 1866 for a portrait and another in 1871 for a historical theme.
