Calderara was a self-taught artist, experimenting in different styles and genres until the early 1950s. Calderara was a self-taught artist, experimenting in different styles and genres until the early 1950s. He eventually found his favorite subject matter in the landscape of Lake Orta, where he lived for decades. In 1959 the artist created his first purely abstract painting and developed a geometric approach creating expressive compositions of flat squares, right angles and lines and only a few colors in the following years.
