He received his first commission at the age of sixteen and became known for his landscape paintings, which he created using various mediums. He traveled extensively throughout France, Europe, and the Maghreb, bringing back works that captured the light and atmosphere of the places he visited. Villon was a member of the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts and the Société des Artistes Français in Paris. He co-founded the Société des Aquarellistes Lyonnais in 1934 with Antoine Barbier. Villon was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1937
