As a freelance artist, he produced illustrations for various publishers from 1975-80, followed by stage designs in 1980/81. Mackensen paints, draws, engraves, sculpts, films, and photographs, alternating between abstract and figurative. Since 2008 he has lived and worked as a freelancer in Sondershausen.
