Piana exhibited at the Permanente of Milan and gained unexpected public success. He was known for his portraits, still lifes, and landscapes in the post-impressionist style, as well as his expertise in fresco technique. Piana lived most of his life in Bordighera and was particularly interested in the colors and luminous landscapes of the area. He was commissioned by Queen Margherita to paint a fresco for the Villa Etelinda
