From 1980 to 1982, he was a visiting professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. From 1985 until 1998, he was the successor of Günter Fruhtrunk at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Works by Helmut Sturm are on display in major museum collections, including the Kunsthalle Emden (donation Otto van de Loo).
