January Suchodolski was a Polish painter born in 1797. He studied painting in Rome under Horace Vernet and became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in 1839. He was known for his historical and battle paintings, genre scenes, horse portraits, and seascapes. Suchodolski returned to Poland and brought a new plastic model to the Warsaw artistic milieu. He was known for his historical and battle paintings, genre scenes, horse portraits, and seascapes. Suchodolski returned to Poland and brought a new plastic model to the Warsaw artistic milieu. He was hailed as the "Polish Vernet" and was an artist who could create paintings that masterfully imitated reality and carried patriotic content or were embedded in the near reality of the Napoleonic wars. Suchodolski died in 1875.
