January Suchodolski was a Polish painter born in 1797. He studied painting in Rome under Horace Vernet and became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg in 1839. He was known for his historical and battle paintings, genre scenes, horse portraits, and seascapes. Suchodolski returned to Poland and brought a new plastic model to the Warsaw artistic milieu.
