At the age of 7 he emigrated with his family to Spain, where he received his initial artistic training at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid and later at the San Fernando Academy. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Helguera returned to Mexico in 1938, where he toured much of the national territory knowing the customs and traditions of Mexico.
