In 1947 he settled in Vienna and studied painting with Herbert Boeckl at the Academy of Fine Arts. His work was inspired by the early Austrian Expressionism and artists like Richard Gerstl and Jean Egger. In 1958, Stark returned to Vienna. In 1980 he founded the Galerie Austria at St. Stephen's Square. Since the mid-1990s, it has been run by Stark’s son.
