Some of his work from his "Voyages" series, showing automatist techniques, can be found at the Hallie Ford Museum in Salem, Oregon. In 1927, he went to sea, and from 1929 was based in Seattle. From 1930, he began making trips to Mexico, Central America, and then traveled to Europe in the 1950s. From 1932 to 1946, he was a curator at the Seattle Art Museum and also was a visiting artist to numerous universities.
