The landscape and genre painter was born in Haarlem and became a member of the local painters’ guild in 1651. Molenaer was specialized in peasant motifs, coastal and winter landscapes as well as small genre scenes. He was probably a friend or the brother of Jan Miense Molenaer (c.1610-1669), a famous student of Frans Hals. A selection of his works is preserved today at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, at the Van der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal and at the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne. (cbo)... Read full biography
