Born in Gainesville, Texas, Mary Witherspoon became a painter of still life, landscapes, and figures and was especially known for her miniatures in oil and watercolor. She settled in Fort Worth, Texas but studied and worked in the East. She was a member of the Brooklyn Society of Miniature Painters and exhibited at the Old Lyme, Connecticut and the Pennsylvania Miniature Society. She settled in Fort Worth, Texas but studied and worked in the East. She was a member of the Brooklyn Society of Miniature Painters and exhibited at the Old Lyme, Connecticut and the Pennsylvania Miniature Society. In Old Lyme in 1929, she was a student of Lydia Eastwick Longacare, who had a strong influence on her career. In the 1930s, she studied with John Sloan at the Art Students League in New York City, and in 1940 she took a job as a draftsman and construction-cost estimator for Swift and Company in Fort Worth. In Old Lyme in 1929, she was a student of Lydia Eastwick Longacare, who had a strong influence on her career. In the 1930s, she studied with John Sloan at the Art Students League in New York City, and in 1940 she took a job as a draftsman and construction-cost estimator for Swift and Company in Fort Worth.
