Born in the North Welsh mining village of Abertridwr, Prendergast's artistic endeavors were encouraged early on by his art teacher Gomer Lewis, and he began to draw the landscape of the surrounding Aber valley and the people and community who lived in his town. After winning a scholarship to Cardiff School of Art in 1961, Prendergast attended the Slade in London, where he was taught by Frank Auerbach, who had a great influence on his work - focusing on the construction and geometry of his drawings rather than expressionism.
