Study trips allowed him to discover Florence from 1886 to 1893 and the Académie Julian in Paris from 1896 to 1899, where he met, for instance, Auguste Rodin. In 1899 Engelmann established himself in Berlin, where he had close contact to the Berlin Secession. Study trips allowed him to discover Florence from 1886 to 1893 and the Académie Julian in Paris from 1896 to 1899, where he met, for instance, Auguste Rodin. In 1899 Engelmann established himself in Berlin, where he had close contact to the Berlin Secession. A highly regarded sculptor, Engelmann was appointed to the Weimar Saxon Grand Ducal Art School in 1913, where he worked until 1919. In 1919/20 he was temporarily also active at the Bauhaus in Weimar.
