In 1899 Engelmann established himself in Berlin, where he had close contact to the Berlin Secession. A highly regarded sculptor, Engelmann was appointed to the Weimar Saxon Grand Ducal Art School in 1913, where he worked until 1919. In 1919/20 he was temporarily also active at the Bauhaus in Weimar.
