He was encouraged by Daniel MacNee to take up painting. Sam Bough is best remembered for his Scottish and north of England landscape scenes. His early style is minute and detailed; after 1860 his handling became broader and more confident. In Glasgow between 1848-1855, Sam Bough often worked with the landscape artist, Alexander Fraser, in the Cadzow Forest. His painting, In Cadzow Forest (1857), influenced by McCulloch, is a 'magnificent' portrait of two ancient trees. He later fell out with McCulloch, (their dogs apparently taking sides in the dispute). Bough... Read full biography
