Alois Carigiet was born in 1902 in Trun, in the Swiss canton of Grisons and already in his early years he designed stage sets and costumes for a cabaret. In 1939 he began working as a freelance artist and illustrated children's books such as the well-known Swiss picture book ‘Schellenursli’. He was also given various awards, amongst others twice with the Young People’s Book Prize of the Swiss Teacher Association in 1948 and 1966 as well as with the Grisons cultural prize.
