Arthur Perigal Jr. was born in London in 1816 and brought to Edinburgh at a very young age. He followed in his father's footsteps, who was an artist and pupil of Fuseli, and focused on landscape painting. Perigal became an Associate in 1841 and an Academician in 1868. He primarily painted mountain and loch scenery in Scotland but expanded his subjects after visiting Italy and Switzerland.
