Carl Emil Uphoff was born in Witten, Germany in 1885. Uphoff's artistic development dates back to 1907. He was supported by art patron Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen in Westphalia. He had modern art before his eyes in his museum Folkwang, which was founded in 1902. At the same time, Uphoff became a member of the "Folkwang-Kreis" in Hagen where he was amicably supported by Christian Rohlfs. At the same time, Uphoff became a member of the "Folkwang-Kreis" in Hagen where he was amicably supported by Christian Rohlfs.
