Hammer was known for being a German painter and draftsman. He had an intensive occupation with animal painting. He took several trips and traveled on foot to Milan, Venice and Trieste. He participated several times in royal Hofjagden. He went to Constantinople in 1866. Works by the artist are owned by the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden. He also worked for the Leipziger Illustrierte Zeitung and for over 20 years for the gazebo.
