Ferdinand Wagner was the son of Ferdinand Wagner senior, from whom he received the first lessons. After a trip to Italy in 1867-1868, he continued his artistic studies at the Munich Academy of Arts, led by Peter Von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr Von Carolsfeld. Much appreciated as a decorative painter, he performed several works on the wall and ceiling of the Munich Ratskeller.
