During an apprenticeship as a goldsmith in his hometown of Leipzig, Paul Herbert Beck (1920-2010) attended drawing lessons from Max Schwimmer at the School of Applied Arts for graphics and design. In 1948 he fled to West Germany, settled in Tegernsee and began to paint autodidactic. Already in 1952 his first exhibition of oil paintings was shown at the Gallery Commeter in Hamburg.
