Ekenæs came to pick up his motifs from his own well-known environment in Norway, and settled in Åsgårdstrand in 1894. "Ekenæs was a very skilled photographer and among his papers there are a lot of photographs of Norwegian farmers and fishermen that he used as a starting point for his paintings.
