He was a renowned bird illustrator, working on important ornithological reference books such as the "Monograph on Kingfishers," the "Catalogue of the birds," and "A History of the birds of New Zealand." Johannes Gerardus Keulemans, also known as John Gerard Keulemans, was a Netherlandish painter and illustrator who flourished in the 19th century. He was a renowned bird illustrator, working on important ornithological reference books such as the "Monograph on Kingfishers," the "Catalogue of the birds," and "A History of the birds of New Zealand." Keulemans embarked on an expedition to West Africa in 1864 to discover and draw new bird species, supported by Hermann Schlegel, the director of the Imperial Museum of Natural History in Leiden.
