Nita Spilhaus was born in Portugal to a Portuguese mother and German father. After her parents' death, she was raised in Lübeck, Germany. She trained as an artist in Germany before relocating to South Africa in 1908. In South Africa, she integrated into the artistic community, joining the South African Society of Artists and befriending prominent artists. Spilhaus was most prolific in the early 20th century, working and exhibiting with fellow artists. She married Ernst Simon in 1921 and lived in Munich from 1925 to 1938 before returning to the Cape. Spilhaus began to lose her eyesight in the 1950s, which ended her artistic career.
