Spilhaus was most prolific in the early 20th century, working and exhibiting with fellow artists. She married Ernst Simon in 1921 and lived in Munich from 1925 to 1938 before returning to the Cape. Spilhaus began to lose her eyesight in the 1950s, which ended her artistic career.
