He immigrated to the United States in 1848 and settled in Philadelphia where he worked for Peter S. Duval until 1857. His most well known lithographs were of Civil War scenes which later afforded him the opportunity to paint the life portraits of the Generals made famous in that war. He immigrated to the United States in 1848 and settled in Philadelphia where he worked for Peter S. Duval until 1857. His most well known lithographs were of Civil War scenes which later afforded him the opportunity to paint the life portraits of the Generals made famous in that war. For a brief period in the 1850s (1850 or 1851) Kramer was also associated with Lewis N. Rosenthal, another Philadelphia lithographer.
