He was considered a skilled craftsman and one of the great creators of bas-reliefs at the end of the 19th century. Charpentier learned medal engraving at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and later worked as a workshop assistant to the innovative medalist Hubert Ponscarme. Along with Ponscarme, Louis-Oscar Roty, and other artists, Charpentier played a significant role in the resurgence of artistry in French medal design.
